On October 20th, we gathered in Portland for the kickoff of the single-stair student design competition. Michael Eliason, RA, delivered a keynote lecture on single-stair code reform and the possibilities it unlocks for housing design.

Students, faculty, and mentors came together to hear the competition brief and ask questions before submissions opened.

Michael Eliason, RA.

Michael Eliason, RA — architect, author of Building For People, and keynote speaker

Michael is the founder and principal of Larch Lab. He is a researcher, writer, urbanist, and architect based in Seattle.

He is a licensed architect, holds a B.Arch from Virginia Tech, and has been an advocate and consultant for Passivhaus buildings for over a decade.

He is also the author of Building For People (Island Press, 2024).
